Demarcation Systems: Freestanding Post and Chain Barriers
Freestanding demarcation is a quick, economical way to separate people from hazards. Hi-vis Kee Mark posts stand in heavy-duty 25kg bases and carry chain between them to mark off plant, equipment, fragile materials and pedestrian routes. Nothing is drilled or fixed, the system is maintenance free, and it packs down small for moving and storage.

How the System Works
Each upright sits in a heavy-duty PVC base weighing 25kg. The weight of the base keeps the post standing, including in severe weather outdoors, so there is no drilling into floors or roofs. High visibility two-colour polyurethane chain links the posts to make a clear, continuous line. The system is compact and easy to assemble, and it moves as the job moves.

How to Choose
- Single or twin chain. A single chain upright carries one line. A twin chain upright carries two.
- Plastic or steel chain. 6mm plastic chain comes per 25m; 6mm steel chain comes per 100m. Total the chain for every run.
- Demarcation or something stronger. Demarcation marks a boundary. It does not stop a vehicle or guard a drop. Use the table below to check you have the right product.

Where Demarcation Is Used
- Around plant and equipment in warehouses and factories, to keep people clear and restrict access around machinery.
- Around fragile materials that need keeping clear.

When a Route Needs to Be Fixed
Where a walkway is permanent and takes knocks, a fixed rail built from key clamp fittings and galvanised tube is the step up. On another site, a double handrail built with key clamps marks a safe route through a busy car park, and because the rail is modular, a section damaged by a vehicle can be replaced rather than refabricated.
Where a fixed rail needs a chained opening, the A64 hook fixes to a vertical post and the chain lifts off it easily; use an A36 male swivel and a D shackle at the other end. The A50 swivel base gives a wall fixing for chain. A chain only protects an opening if the last person put it back, so where people pass through regularly, a self-closing gate is the better choice: it closes automatically behind the user, so the opening is never left open.
