Forklifts and other machines work close to racking, columns, corners and pipes every shift. Forklift impact protection means the right barriers, placed at the right points, take the knock instead of your infrastructure, so damage and downtime stay low and your team keeps working safely. This guide shows where impacts happen in warehouses and factories, and how to choose the right product for each point. Fisher Alvin has supplied galvanised steel safety products since 1912, and we hold our warehouse safety barriers in stock, so protection reaches your site quickly.

Where to Place Guards on Your Site

Start with a site walk and list every point that has been hit, or could be. In most warehouses the same areas come up: the ends of racking runs, uprights at aisle and gangway intersections, columns and wall corners, pipe runs and services, and loading areas where a forklift turns on the warehouse floor. Those are the first places to plan forklift impact protection when you set out a layout. Because each guard stands in front of one point, you put it exactly where the impact happens, which keeps the system simple and the cost of repairing damage down.

How Barriers Protect Against Material Handling Equipment

Each guard is a single, self-contained protector that sits in front of one vulnerable point and takes the knock first. It is not a run of barrier, so it suits the places where a vehicle or other material handling equipment works closest to your structure. The steel is hot dip galvanised for durability, and the RAL 1021 yellow powder coat gives strong visibility, so every forklift driver and pedestrian sees each guard from a distance. Good visibility is part of forklift impact protection because it helps prevent collisions, and if a knock still happens, the barrier is there to absorb it and protect your racking, goods and people.

Matching the Guard and Height to the Point

For forklift impact protection at each point, start with what gets hit, then choose the product to suit it. Every guard is galvanised and bolt-down, so it fixes straight to the floor:

  • Racking uprights and rack ends: racking protection barriers in 750mm, 1000mm or 1250mm.
  • Columns and building structure: structural protection barriers in 500mm, 1000mm or 1500mm, often called column guards.
  • Pipe runs: pipe protection barriers in 1000mm or 1500mm.
  • Services: service protection barriers in 500mm or 750mm.
  • Posts and other uprights: vertical protection barriers in 1000mm or 1500mm.
  • Wall corners: a corner protector, in one size.

Most guards come in two or three heights, so there are options for every point. Choose a height that covers the part of the upright a vehicle or its load could reach. If you are not sure, tell us which forklift is operating on site and what it carries, and we will advise on the right product.

Barriers, Safety Protocols and Marked Routes

Guards support your safety protocols and do not replace them. Pair the barriers with marked walkways or a pedestrian rail to protect employees on foot, and with pallet gates where goods move between levels. Our post on separating pedestrians, vehicles and equipment covers the segregation side, and the HSE’s guide to warehousing and storage, HSG76, is the recognised UK guidance on racking and site transport.

Warehouses and Manufacturing Facilities: Sizing the Job

Our warehouse safety barriers are ideal for warehouses, factories, public buildings and office blocks, indoors or out. Typical areas are racking aisles, loading and turning areas, plant rooms and service runs, and companies with manufacturing facilities often have all of these on one site.

Ordering takes four steps: list each point, note what it is, choose the height, then request a quote with dimensions or a sketch. We reply within one hour in working hours, offer a free design service, and deliver stock orders next day.

Protection That Keeps Work Moving

The benefits of forklift impact protection are simple. Guarding the few points that take the hits keeps your racking, structure and routes working, and your team can keep loading and moving goods with confidence.
