Full Height Self-Closing Gates for Ladder Tops and Roof Hatches
A full height self-closing gate closes the opening at the top of a fixed ladder with a gate as tall as the guardrail around it. Ours stand 1100mm high, carry an aluminium toe board at the bottom and swing shut on a spring every time someone passes through, so the opening is never left open. They fit openings up to 1m wide, in galvanised steel or safety yellow, and have been designed to comply with BS 4211, the specification for permanently fixed ladders.
They are for site, facilities and maintenance managers protecting ladder tops, roof hatches, platforms and machinery access points. The gates retro-fit to existing guardrail and roof edge protection, are quoted within one hour during working hours, and stock orders go out for next-day delivery.
How a Full Height Gate Works
At the top of a fixed ladder the climber steps off next to a drop. The gate has to protect that opening as well as the guardrail either side of it does. Full height gates use the same design, build quality and spring-loaded mechanism as our KEE GATE single and double self-closing gates, at full guardrail height.
- Spring-loaded closing. The spring brings the gate back to closed after every use, so nobody has to remember to shut it. A chain or bar only works if the last person put it back.
- Slam plate. Makes sure the gate latches securely as it closes, including in high-traffic or exposed positions.
- 1100mm height. Designed to give full torso protection where there is a vertical drop.
- Aluminium toe board. Helps stop tools, materials and debris going through the gap at floor level.
Full Height or Standard Gate
Standard self-closing gates suit most openings in handrail and guardrail. Where there is a vertical drop, such as the top of a permanently fixed ladder or beside a roof hatch, a standard gate may not give enough physical coverage. That is where the full height gate comes in.

Standards and Testing
The gates have been designed to comply with BS 4211, the specification for permanently fixed ladders. BS 4211 requires gates on ladders to offer the same level of protection as EN 14122-3 compliant guardrail.
- Standards. Extensively tested to comply with BS 4211:2008 and EN 14122-3:2016.
- Life cycle test. 50,000 open and close cycles through 90 degrees.
- Salt spray test. 672 hours for corrosion resistance, for continued operation in corrosive environments.
- Test reports are available on request.
The product listings also state that the gates comply with the test requirements of EN 13374 Class A and EN 14122-3.
Materials and Finish
The gates are made in galvanised steel, with a powder coated safety yellow option. Galvanised suits internal and external industrial environments. Safety yellow withstands outdoor conditions and makes the gate easier to see, especially in busy or low-light areas.
Fitting and Adjustment
The gates can be retro-fitted to existing fixed structures where opening protection is needed, such as guardrail or roof edge protection already on the roof, without reworking the full access system. The width is fully adjustable and can be cut to fit the opening. Hinges are reversible, so the gate can hang on the left or right of the opening. Gates are quick and easy to assemble and are supplied part assembled.
