Enhancing Safety and Compliance at West Midlands Hire with Fisher Alvin Solutions
Customer: West Midlands Hire
Location: Smethwick
Project Date: August 2024
Products Used: Key Clamp Tubing & Self-Closing Safety Gates
Background
West Midlands Hire, a family-owned business established in 1973, has been a leading provider of short-term vehicle rentals, ranging from small vans to large 44-tonne tractor units. The company also operates a fully equipped vehicle workshop for repairs. Known for being the first LDV-approved manufacturer dealer since LDV’s return, West Midlands Hire has built a reputation for reliability and excellence in the automotive rental industry.
The Challenge
In July 2024, West Midlands Hire identified a significant issue with their newly constructed MOT Service area. The area did not meet essential Health and Safety Regulations, posing potential risks to both staff and clients. Specifically, there was a need to restrict access to the MOT service area to prevent unauthorised entry, as well as to ensure the safety of individuals in and around the workshop.
The company required a solution that would not only meet regulatory standards but also seamlessly integrate into the existing infrastructure. The project needed to include powder-coated key clamp fittings and tubes, alongside both single and double self-closing gates to control access effectively.

Solution Provided by Fisher Alvin
A Fisher Alvin representative, visited the site to assess the situation firsthand. He measured the space, evaluated the specific safety needs, and advised on the optimal placement of safety gates to ensure pedestrian access was controlled without hindering operations.
Fisher Alvin provided a comprehensive solution, including:
- Powder-Coated Key Clamp Fittings and Tubing: These were used to construct durable barriers and structures that are compliant with safety standards.
- Self-Closing Safety Gates: Both single and double gates were installed to block unauthorised access to sensitive areas and to create a safe reception area for customers.

The products were promptly sent to powder coaters, ensuring a quick turnaround to meet the customer’s urgent timeline.
Implementation
Once the materials were ready, the installation proceeded smoothly. The self-closing safety gates were strategically placed to block public access to the office and admin areas, as well as the MOT service area. This ensured that only authorised personnel could access these areas, significantly reducing the risk of accidents and improving overall safety.
Results
The installation of Fisher Alvin’s key clamp systems and self-closing gates transformed the MOT service area into a safe and compliant space. The project achieved several key benefits for West Midlands Hire:
- Improved Safety Compliance: The new installations met all required Health and Safety regulations, ensuring that the workshop could operate without risking fines or shutdowns.
- Enhanced Operational Safety: Staff and clients are now protected from potential hazards associated with the MOT service area. The double self-closing gate also created a secure reception area where customers can wait safely.
- Aesthetic and Functional Integration: The powder-coated finish on the clamps and gates provided a durable and visually appealing solution that complemented the existing infrastructure.

West Midlands Hire expressed high satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the solution exceeded their expectations by not only meeting regulatory requirements but also enhancing the overall safety and functionality of their facility.
