Rooflight Covers: What They Are and Who They Are For
A rooflight cover is a galvanised mesh panel on a galvanised frame, secured over an unprotected rooflight so nobody can fall through it, without blocking the light into the building. Our covers are made for metal profile roofs, trapezoidal and standing seam. They are modular: start with a primary panel and add extension panels for bigger rooflights.
They are for building owners, facilities teams and contractors with fragile rooflights on warehouses, factories, farm buildings and commercial roofs. Panels are held in stock with next-day delivery on stock orders, we quote within one hour in working hours, and our free design service will work out the panels for your rooflight.
Panels and Codes
| Model | Primary panel | Extension panels |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (fixes almost flat to the roof) | 2 x 1m (FA21PMST1) or 1 x 2m (FA12PMST2) | 2 x 1m (FA21XMST1), 1 x 1m (FA11XMST1) or 1 x 2m (FA12XMST2) |
| Raised (mounted above the rooflight) | 2 x 1m (FA21PMRA1) or 1 x 2m (FA12PMRA2) | 2 x 1m (FA21XMRA1), 1 x 1m (FA11XMRA1) or 1 x 2m (FA12XMRA2) |
Primary panels are 2m long and 1m wide. The standard 2 x 1m primary panel measures 1973mm x 1000mm and weighs 22kg. Extension panels are 2m or 1m long by 1m wide. Parts shown in black in the product images are included; parts in white are not.
How Rooflight Covers Work
The cover is a component-based system: a strong mesh panel supported by a metal frame, secured directly to the trapezoidal or standing seam roof over the rooflight. It covers the hazard rather than fencing it off, so people can work closer to the rooflight, and the mesh still lets natural light into the building. Because the panels are modular, they are easy to carry onto the roof, which keeps installation costs down.

Standard or Raised: How to Choose
Standard model. Fixes almost flat to the roof surface and is designed to be permanently secured directly over the rooflight. Suited to long-term protection.
Raised model. Mounted above the rooflight to leave a greater distance between the mesh panel and the rooflight. It is designed so that, in the event of a fall, the cover takes the weight without damaging the rooflight.
Other choices to make:
- Rooflight size. Start with a primary panel and add 2m or 1m extension panels for bigger or different shaped rooflights. Send us the rooflight size and we will work out the combination.
- Visibility. The tube can be colour coated where the cover needs to stand out.
- Roof type. Covers are for metal profile roofs. On flat membrane roofs, or where you want to fence the rooflight off, see skylight guardrails.
Materials and Durability
All parts, including the mesh panels, are hot-dip galvanised for corrosion resistance and durability. The frame and panel will not go brittle. The tube can be colour coated for greater visibility, with galvanised as standard.
Standards and the Law
The covers are listed as tested to EN ISO 1873:2014 Part 2 and as complying with the ACR Red Book.
Falls through fragile roof surfaces, especially fragile rooflights, are one of the biggest causes of serious injury from work at height. The Work at Height Regulations require that anyone working on or near a fragile surface ensures, as far as reasonably practical, that suitable fall protection is provided. Covers provide collective fall protection for everyone on the roof. Our guide to fragile roofs on farm buildings explains what Regulation 9 requires. The finished installation, and the assessment of the roof, are the responsibility of whoever installs and signs it off.
Where They Are Used

Rooflight Cover Questions
Do rooflight covers block the light?
No. The mesh panel covers the rooflight while still letting natural light into the building.
Which roofs are they for?
Metal profile roofs, both trapezoidal and standing seam.
What is the difference between standard and raised covers?
The standard model fixes almost flat to the roof over the rooflight. The raised model is mounted above it to leave more distance between the mesh and the rooflight, so that in a fall it takes the weight without damaging the rooflight.
What size are the panels?
Primary panels are 2m long and 1m wide. The standard 2 x 1m primary panel measures 1973mm x 1000mm and weighs 22kg. Extension panels are 2m or 1m long by 1m wide.
How do I cover a bigger rooflight?
Start with a primary panel and add extension panels. Send us the rooflight length and width and we will work out the combination.
Which standards are they listed to?
Rooflight covers are listed as tested to EN ISO 1873:2014 Part 2 and as complying with the ACR Red Book.
Can the covers be coloured?
Yes. The tube can be colour coated for greater visibility. Everything is hot-dip galvanised as standard.
